Check a YC Company Profile Before It Enters Your Investment Meeting

A three-pass check for separating a YC source listing, a fund-neutral profile, and your own investment judgment.

Published October 27, 2026GPAgent Team

Do not carry a polished company summary into a partner meeting until you have opened the underlying listing. For YC research, the name, batch, company website, and product description can each drift independently. A plausible paragraph about the wrong company is worse than an empty profile: it gives the room false confidence.

Start with the identity, not the prose

Open the company's page in GPAgent's YC directory, then follow its link to the YC company directory. Compare the name, website, and batch on the two pages. If the source link resolves to a different company, stop. Do not rescue the summary by polishing its language.

GPAgent's public company page separates its own fund-neutral profile from the source description. It labels the profile and shows when that profile was updated; if no profile exists, it says so and offers the source listing instead. This separation matters when the source updates a product description after your research was drafted. The profile's update date is not proof that every underlying fact is current.

Turn the discrepancy into a meeting question

Suppose the public listing calls the product a tool for clinic billing while a saved summary calls it a hospital data platform. Those are hypothetical descriptions, not a claim about a real YC company. The useful meeting note is: "Source describes clinic billing; saved summary says hospital data; confirm customer and buyer before discussing market size." It is not an invented answer about which description wins.

Check the linked company website for the claimed workflow. If a source is missing or the company has changed direction, label the open question and leave valuation, customer counts, and market-size assertions out of the briefing. The company may have changed; the summarizer may have failed; or two similarly named companies may have been confused. The meeting can still proceed, but the disputed sentence must not become the premise for an investment decision.

Keep the public profile and the fund's private conviction in different places. A public description is not an endorsement or an IC memo. GPAgent's platform connects company discovery with a private deal workspace, where partners can record the reasoning and the underlying artifacts. That split lets another reader check a public fact without exposing the fund's thesis notes.

FAQ

Can I use the profile instead of reading the source?

Use it to decide what to check next. Open the linked YC listing for company identity and the company's own site for product claims. A summary cannot verify itself.

Is the profile update date the date YC verified the company?

No. It dates GPAgent's profile text, not independent verification by YC. Treat it as a cue to revisit the underlying source, not a certification.
